QUOTE
-Advancing both the intake/exhaust-
increase bottem end power while decreasing top end power. Moves the overlap period early in the rpm band but can create more detonation at low rpm

-Retard both intake and exhaust-
Increase top end power while decreasing bottem end, moves the overlap period later in the cyle where its more effective for scavenging the cyls at high rpms

-Advance intake only-
increases overlap and starts overlap period eariler. This helps with bottom end power and midrange without sacrificing too much top end power.
Works best on a stock head.

-Retard intake cam only-
starts overlap period later, reduces overlap. usually helps top end power at the expense of the lower and mid range. stock type motors dont like this.

-Advance exhaust cam only-
reduces overlap and increase blowdown by opening the exhaust valve sooner. this can shorten the power stroke. usually helps top end power at the expense of lower mid range.

-retard exhaust cam only-
this increase overlap and helps bottem and midrange. works best on usually stock heads.
