As some of you know, I ended up taking my transmission out on Sept 16th on my 2nd day at thunder hill for thunder drift.

The transmission was whining in 1st,2nd & 3rd and made some LIGHT noise just barely audible over the engine/exhaust @ idle. It was silent in 4th & 5th gear. Given the way it sounded I was pretty sure it was the input shaft roller/needle bearings that go inbetween the input shaft & output shaft - as they were the only bearings I didn't replace when I rebuilt the trans about 2 years ago.

This last sunday I had Rob come over to give me a 2nd set of hands to yank the transmission. So we get it out on the ground, tear it down and find the bearings are fine. Fuck axe.gif .

But the input shaft which has 4th gear on it, as a part of it, is scored/damaged. As well as the countershaft front gear. These are the 2 most heavily loaded gears in the trans as they supply power for 1st, 2nd & 3rd gear. For a minute I'm like shit, wtf am I going to do. confused.gif

Then I remember I still have my other trans slap.gif , from the original parts gt-s that I blew 2nd gear out of. It wouldn't stay in 2nd gear.

So I grab it, we rip it apart, the gears look ok. Sweet. Grab the input shaft and countershaft out of this transmission and clean them up. They're going into the trans I just blew, 2 trans into 1 (hopefully) good one. I figure I may as well replace the input shaft bearings on this one (they were already ordered), but I'm going to leave the countershaft bearings alone.

But wait, the drama isn't over yet. blink.gif

This last saturday (before the trans removal) I do an oil change on my truck, and I noticed the coolant level is low in my reservoir, so I top it off and yank the radiator cap. It's low as well. I think, "Man, where the hell did the coolant go?" hmmm.gif But unfortunately I didn't see any leaks or obvious traces of coolant. So Monday I notice a coolant smell coming back from lunch. I'm like shit, I don't have time for this. I get out of the truck when I get back to the office. There's a wet trail I can see in my drivers fenderwell & it looks like it's coming from the reservoir. So I think that was my problem, go inside and finish out the day.

I get home, pop the hood. Great the front edge of the hood is soaked in coolant, and staring me in the face is a 4-5" long crack in the plastic top tank of my radiator. Fortunately I know a few suppliers, 800 radiator has a warehouse in town. Gave them a call. New radiator $146, called @ 8:50-9am, radiator delivered to office @10:15am. Got it in and running that tuesday night hooray.gif . But I still need to go back through, drain everything and use coolant & distilled water.

Yesterday night picked up my input shaft bearings & new speedo gear. Stopped by Marvin's (The guy with the ZX750RR) and pressed on the main front input shaft bearing.

So hopefully I'll have this thing back together tonight. unsure.gif

Yeah, it actually sounds worse than it actually was after re-reading it.

Anyways, got home slapped this puppy together, Rob came over again to help get this thing up and in the car. Filled it with fluid and took it around the block, seems to be working okay. Need to get some more miles on it and feel it out.

The new countershaft has some light wear/scoring marks on it so there's a slight whine in 2nd gear under load, but nothing I'm worried about. And with some more miles the gears may wear into eachother a little bit and quiet down. Or so I hope anyways.
